More of the same – It’s a Good Thing
If Frank Affronti from 104 Contractors, Inc. was acting based on reputation (see article page 4) Steve and Mark Lindstrom (father and son), Lake Shore Paving in Jamestown, NY were basing their buying decisions on experience as they added three new Hamm rollers to their paving fleet.
Lake Shore Paving is a full service site contractor that serves the western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania areas. Lake Shore Paving has been in business since 1998, working for both private industry and public agencies. It can clear a site, grade it, place any concrete and pave the driveways and parking areas. Typical project sizes run from $10,000 to $1.5 million.
“Sometimes a smaller commercial job comes along and occasionally even a residential driveway,” says son Mark.
Rollers play a big part in their daily routine and they’ve come to know what works and what they like. The Hamm name coupled with the name Monroe Tractor have come to be synonymous with such words as dependable and reliable.
Though the Lindstroms connected with a relative newcomer at Monroe Tractor, salesman Jay Taylor had worked with Steve for nearly five years in another capacity, so he understood what the contractor needed. “And, we’ve worked with Monroe Tractor since my father started the business,” said the younger Lindstrom recently. The Hamm rollers have been part of the team almost as long.
Lake Shore puts its equipment to the test, ranging over a territory that covers much of southwestern New York and northwestern Pennsylvania.
While no one knows exactly how many miles the company has put on its rollers in the past decade Mark has been keeping records for nearly half that time that tell the story of some 30,000 tons of asphalt being laid down by the company on an annual basis.
Renting helped cash flow
That’s a lot of blacktop and calls for some variety in equipment. In June of last year the Lindstrom’s rented a “brand spankin’ new” Hamm HD 12 articulated tandem roller from Monroe Tractor. “We knew from the outset that we were going to purchase the machine,” said Steve noting, “Monroe credits 100 percent of the rental cost toward the purchase price if you decide to purchase. So, we figured it gave us time to work with the machine a little with no downside risk and it was easy on our cash flow.”
The HD 12 is a beauty in the Hamm compact line and was purchased to replace an older machine. The 2.8-ton HD 12 VV (Vibration Front, Vibration Rear) is an articulated asphalt compactor, which offers vibrations in both the front and rear drums. with the capability of vibration running in the front drum only, rear drum only, in both drums, or no vibration.
Lake Shore’s new roller offers big-time compacting in a small package, equally at home for commercial or road building applications. It offers a working width of 49.2 inches when offset, and a drum width of 47.2 inches. And, it has a HATZ Model 4W35, 4-cylinder, water cooled, S.A.E.-rated 30-horsepower engine. Lake Shore’s drivers are able to enjoy optimal forward visibility because of its tapered front end, and three-point swivel joint for highest driving comfort.
The HD 12 VV also offers hydrostatic dual drum drive, an automatic/manual vibration system, manual 2″ offset capability, hydrostatic articulated steering and excellent maneuverability. Its operator-friendly features include low sound level, an ergonomic driver’s platform, a modern instrument panel, three braking systems with an emergency stop button, a plastic water tank serving a pressurized water system and plastic, hand-serviceable spray nozzles.
Back in the shop Lake Shore’s mechanics appreciate its easy maintenance while Steve and Mark value its long service intervals.
Next up for the Lindstroms, weighing in with an operating weight of more than 26,000 pounds and an 84-inch drum was the Hamm 3412 soil compactor, or “dirt roller.” The model 3412 features infinitely variable hydrostatic drive, a high degree of gradability, automotive type instrumentation, an ergonomic operator environment including an adjustable sliding and swiveling seat and an adjustable steering column. A no-spin differential, a new design articulation joint, a new cooling system, and unsurpassed visibility from operator’s seat are available in both smooth drum or padfoot models.
